Take action to keep the blood flowing to the brain

KEEP THE OXYGEN SUPPLY TO THE BRAIN PLENTIFUL

Just as the pipes of the hot water system get furred up so too do our arteries and we need to keep our arteries open because the blood flowing from the lungs to the tissues of the body is full of oxygen. The reason your water pipes fur  up is pretty simple, the hardness of the water but there are many factors that cause your blood vessels to narrow, the medical term for furring up being atherosclerosis. The modern environment  has many factors that increase the risk of atheroscleris both in the arteries leading to the brain and within the brain itself.is a big artery is blocked thereat is a stroke but we now know that many tiny strokes can occur none of which affect the muscles and  which therefore do not cause the typical effects of a stroke but they do lead to the death of tiny bits of the brain tissue and if enough of these happen the result is what  is called vascular dementia

To reduce the risk of vascular dementia the same action is needed as is recommended to reduce the risk of a heart attack and the British Heart Foundation website is full of good advice which we discuss in more detail , including how to take action in our book Increase Your Brainabiity and Reduce the Risk of Dementia

The key risk factors for heart disease, stroke and vascular dementia are
  • Smoking, including second hand smoke
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • high levels of cholesterol; here is a link to the report of a very good study reported in the Lancet journal Healthy Longevity
  • Obesity
  • High Blood Pressure
These are well known and there are two other disorders that are less well known but which need careful consideration are
  • Atrial fibrillation and
  • Transient Ischaemic Attacks

it is also very helpful to look at the website of the new Wolfson Centre for the Prevention of Stroke and Dementia in Oxford to understand the latest thinking

Here is  a link to a page with some more detail on this very important cause of  dementia
